Lake Quitman (Sabine River Basin)

Lake Quitman (also known as Wood County Dam No. 1) is located about four miles north of Quitman in northwestern Wood County, on Dry Creek, a tributary of the Lake Fork Creek, which is a tributary of Sabine River. The project is owned and operated by Wood County for flood regulation and recreation. Construction of the earthfill dam, designed by Wisenbaker, Fix, and Associates, began on June 1, 1961, and was completed on June 1, 1962. Impoundment of water began May 15, 1962. The lake has a capacity of 7,440 acre-feet and a surface area of 814 acres at the service spillway crest elevation of 395 feet above mean sea level. The drainage area of Dry Creek above the dam is thirty-one square miles.
